Camera problems

So I haven't posted anything in a while because I managed to mess up my camera. The piece mentioned in my last post has since been completed and looks entirely different. It is currently on display at Framations. Hopefully I'll get back on track and get a new camera! Then I can get things rolling again.

Right now, I'm in the planning stages on a few pieces that I'm hoping to complete for some upcoming regional exhibits.

In Progress

Ok, so this picture turned out much darker than I thought. But this is something I just started. I'm thinking it's going to change dramatically, but at least I pieced together a foundation to build on. I ventured from my norm....I added some commercial fabric. The only thing I've used commercial fabric for in the past few years has been quilts....so we'll see. So far, I'm just using a sheer fabric with lightly printed images, so the dye color show through a bit from the fabric they are layered on top of. Who knows, I may scrap this still. I'm trying to work small lately b/c I'd like to enter a National Small Quilt exhibition (max size 16 x 20!) this summer. So far, nothing wonderful has resulted from my working small.

Geometrics and Organics

Geometrics and Organics
Dyed and quilted Crepe De Chine and Habotai Silk
12 1/2" x 19"
No Frame: Wrap-around bound $125.00

This is something simple I just finished. I was trying to think of something to enter into an upcoming show called "A few of my favorite things" and was drawing a blank. Without a way of doing any realistic printing (besides ordering a screen online or doing phototransfers, or applique, which I'm not totally comfortable with yet) I cou'dn't think of anything to do. But I know that I generally love to use more organic shapes and designs, though when working on actual quilts, I generally stick to more geometric designs. So I thought a simple design mixing the two ideas within the foreground and background.

Silk Sheen I

Silk Sheen I
Dyed and Layered Habotai Silk on Canvas
16" x 20"
Unframed (fabric wraps around canvas) 2006
$275.00

This was something I completed after the discharge pieces in 2006. I was still stuck on the idea of varnishing the fabric to canvas. This was a sort of experiment, using habotai silk in a couple different thinknesses. You can tell some areas are more sheer than others. It has an interesting affect. Though I haven't been moved to try any more of this type yet.

The Web We Weave
Dyed and Discharged Cotton Broadcloth on Canvas
22" x "28"
Unframed (fabric wraps around canvas) 2006
$300.00
Discharged cotton broadcloth. I think doing this much discharging over the course of a month or two gave me a lot of headaches and some freaky dreams.

Supernova

Supernova
Dyed and Discharged Cotton Broadcloth on Canvas
16" x 20"
Unframed (Fabric wraps around canvas) 2006
$200.00
Also Dyed and discharged, though this piece is on cotton broadcloth instead of silk.

Dyed and Discharged Habotai Silk on Canvas
24" x 36"
Unframed (Fabric Wraps around) 2006
NFS
In 2006 I went through a phase of discharging. I know, it sounds disgusting. It smells as bad. Discharge is a type of paste substance that is added to dyed fabric that removes dye from the fabric when heat is applied. Basically it is a bleaching agent, a little bit safer, though just as stinky. This is the first of three you will see here that uses this technique and then the finished product is varnished onto a stretched canvas.

Orange Glow

Orange Glow
Dyed and Quilted Habotai Silk
20" x 38 1/2"
Unframed: Wrap-around Bound: 2003
$250.00

This piece is another older one, completed in 2003. there's something wonderful about fabric that is so sheer and delicate that you can truly layer and create new nints of colors showing the layer beneath.

Metamorphosis I & II

Metamorphosis: Phase I
Dyed and Quilted Rayon
~22" x 36"
Unframed (Backer Board) 2002
$225.00

Metamorphis was a series I completed as a portion of my B.A. requirements in college. The series contains six pieces, the first two of which are shown here.
They were all completed through a series of templates whichwere transferred onto dyed rayon and then sewn. The stitches were all zigzagged tightly and tension was changed to allow the bobbin color to come up and be a part of the piece. They were then glued to backer boards and varnished to stiffen and enhance color depth. The series was all in blues, using a sort of symbol I dreamed up and then twisted a little bit more in each piece until it was no longer recognizable. A couple of these pieces have not survived being packed and moved several times since their completion in 2002 (year of completion of the art program at Truman State).

Dyeing for Fibers

It's all new to me. I'm trying to decide if I want to invest in a website for myself (art) or not. When I say invest, I'm talking cheapo-do-it-yourself kind of stuff. But still. Want to get it out there.
